On the 17th of October 1956, Queen Elizabeth II opened Calder Hall in Cumbria, the world’s first full-scale commercial nuclear power station: a defining moment for civil nuclear energy.
That same year, the British Insurance (Atomic Energy) Committee, NRI’s predecessor, was formed as the insurance markets solution in collaboration with the UK Government to provide nuclear insurance to Calder Hall and began providing insurance cover for nuclear risks, laying the foundations for seven decades of specialist support to the nuclear industry.
As the sector has evolved, specialist insurance has helped manage its unique risks. Today, NRI draws on 70 years of experience and expertise to support the safe and responsible operation and development of nuclear facilities.
